Overview

GeoTrace ("we", "us", or "our") is a GPS-based land measurement application. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app and its third-party service providers collect, why, and what choices you have.

What stays local: your GPS measurement points, saved projects, and exported reports are stored only on your device unless you sign in and subscribe to or purchase GeoTrace Pro, which enables cloud sync.
⚠️What isn't local: GeoTrace uses Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Analytics, Crashlytics, Performance Monitoring, Cloud Messaging), Google AdMob, and Google Play Billing. Each of these transmits certain data to Google's servers — or, in Firestore's case, to our own database — described below.

By using GeoTrace, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the app.

02

Data We Collect

Device identifiers, model, OS version, subscription tier, install/last-active datesYesFirebase & AdMob for diagnostics/ad delivery, and our own Google Firestore database for app health monitoring and support

Rows marked Device only never leave your phone under normal use. Rows marked Shared are transmitted to the named Google service — or, where noted, to our own Firestore database — as part of that feature working.

03

Location Data

GeoTrace uses your device's GPS to provide land measurement functionality. Location access is the core feature of the app.

  • Location is accessed only while you are actively using the app
  • GPS coordinates are used to place measurement points on the map and calculate area/distance
  • Saved measurement coordinates are stored on your device always. If you sign in and subscribe to or purchase Pro, your projects and measurements — including GPS coordinates — are additionally synced to our Google Firestore database, so they're available across your devices
  • Approximate location (derived from network/IP) may be used by Google Play Services and AdMob for service delivery and ad relevance, independent of the app's own GPS use
  • You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings
ℹ️Cloud sync is available now as part of GeoTrace Pro. If you never sign in, or sign in without Pro, your GPS coordinates stay device-only as described above.
04

Analytics & Crash Reporting

GeoTrace uses three Firebase products to understand how the app is used and to fix problems:

Firebase Analytics

Collects app interaction events (screens viewed, features used, session length) and general device information (device model, OS version, country/region derived from IP). Used to understand feature usage and improve the app.

Firebase Crashlytics

When the app crashes or encounters an error, a crash report is sent to Google containing stack traces, device state at the time of the crash, and device model/OS info. This does not include your measurement data.

Firebase Performance Monitoring

Collects technical metrics such as app startup time, network request latency, and screen rendering performance.

Internal account & install records

Separately from Firebase Analytics above, we maintain our own record for each install — device model, OS version, app version, subscription tier, and install/last-active dates — used to monitor app health and provide support. If you sign in, this record also includes your email and display name, and your push notification token if notifications are enabled, so we can identify and assist a specific account. This is stored in our Google Firestore database, not a Google analytics product, and access is restricted to the developer.

All of the above are provided by, or built on, Google Firebase, and governed additionally by Google's Privacy Policy.

05

Advertising

GeoTrace displays ads through Google AdMob. AdMob may collect your advertising ID, general device information, approximate location, and ad interaction data (impressions, clicks) to select and measure ads, and may share this with its network of ad partners.

  • You can opt out of personalized advertising in your device's ad settings (Android Settings → Privacy → Ads → "Opt out of Ads Personalization")
  • You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in device settings
  • Ads are provided by third-party networks and are subject to their own privacy policies

See Google's advertising policy for how AdMob data is used across its network.

06

Accounts & Cloud Sync

Creating an account is optional. If you choose to sign in (via Firebase Authentication with Google), we collect the email address and display name associated with your Google account.

Signing in by itself only stores your email/display name (for account identification and support) — it does not require or enable payment. If you additionally subscribe to or purchase GeoTrace Pro, your projects and measurements, including GPS coordinates, are synced to Google Firestore so they're available across your signed-in devices. Deleting a project or measurement while signed in and Pro removes it from Firestore too, not just your device.

If you never sign in, no account data is created and your data remains local to the device, as described in the sections above.

07

In-App Purchases

GeoTrace uses Google Play Billing for any in-app purchases (e.g. premium features, if offered). Purchases are processed entirely by Google Play; GeoTrace receives a purchase confirmation and entitlement status but does not receive or store your payment card details. Purchase history is retained by Google Play under your Google account.

08

Camera & Photos

GeoTrace requests camera access so you can attach photos to measurement projects (e.g. site photos, reference images). Photos are stored locally on your device and included in cloud sync only if you've signed in and cloud sync is enabled. GeoTrace does not access your camera or photo library in the background, and does not use photos for any purpose beyond the project you attach them to.

09

Push Notifications

GeoTrace uses Firebase Cloud Messaging to send optional push notifications (e.g. app updates, reminders). This requires a device-specific messaging token to be registered with Firebase and stored against your device/account record. You can disable notifications at any time in your device's app notification settings.

10

App Permissions

GeoTrace requests the following Android permissions:

PermissionPurposeRequired?
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATIONGPS-based land measurementYes — core feature
ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATIONNetwork-based position fallbackOptional
CAMERAAttach photos to measurement projectsOptional
POST_NOTIFICATIONSShow app notifications (Android 13+)Optional
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATEDetect connectivity for online map tiles and syncOptional
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android ≤12)Import geo files (KML, GPX, CSV, etc.)Optional
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android ≤10)Save exported PDF reports and screenshotsOptional
INTERNETMap tiles, sync, analytics, adsOptional (core measuring works offline)

You may deny optional permissions. Core measurement functionality remains available with only location permission granted, though ads, sync, and notifications rely on network access.

11

Data Storage & Retention

  • Measurements, project names, GPS points, and exported files are stored locally on your device by default
  • If you sign in and subscribe to or purchase Pro, project data — including GPS coordinates — is additionally stored in Google Firestore and retained until you delete it or request account deletion
  • If you sign in (with or without Pro), your email, display name, and device/install record are retained in Google Firestore until you request deletion
  • Analytics and crash data are retained by Google according to Firebase's standard retention periods (typically up to 14 months for Analytics)
  • Deleting the app removes locally stored data from your device; it does not delete data already synced to your account — contact us to remove that (see Your Rights & Choices below)
  • We recommend enabling device-level encryption for additional local security
12

Third-Party Services

GeoTrace integrates the following third-party services, all operated by Google:

  • Google Maps / Places SDK — map tile imagery and location search
  • Google Play Services — device location and core Android services
  • Firebase Authentication — optional sign-in
  • Firebase Firestore — cloud sync/backup of project data for Pro subscribers, our own per-account/install records, and app feedback
  • Firebase Analytics — usage analytics
  • Firebase Crashlytics — crash reporting
  • Firebase Performance Monitoring — app performance metrics
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging — push notifications
  • Google AdMob — in-app advertising
  • Google Play Billing — in-app purchases

Each service operates under Google's Privacy Policy in addition to this one.

13

Your Rights & Choices

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your data (e.g. under GDPR or CCPA/CPRA). Since most data lives on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly:

  • Delete locally stored data by clearing app storage or uninstalling the app
  • Request deletion of your account and any synced data by contacting us — there is currently no self-serve in-app deletion option
  • Opt out of ad personalization in your device's ad settings
  • Disable notifications in your device's app settings
  • Revoke location, camera, or storage permissions at any time in device settings
14

Children's Privacy

GeoTrace is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because the app includes advertising (Google AdMob) and analytics, it is not intended for use by children. If you believe a child has used the app and provided personal information, please contact us so we can address it.

15

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, particularly as app features change. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Significant changes will be communicated through an in-app notification. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
